What NOT to Do in Vibe Coding: Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

5 min read

Vibe coding can make you feel like a programming wizard. But without precautions, you might just build a house of cards. Here are the critical 'Don'ts' of AI coding.

“AI is an excellent accelerator, but a terrible decision-maker. Let it write the syntax, never the strategy.”

The speed of Vibe Coding is intoxicating. In a few prompts, you can spawn complete API endpoints, UI forms, or utility classes. But speed is a double-edged sword. When developers write code too quickly without checking the logic, they accumulate a new form of technical debt: AI-induced complexity.

To avoid finding yourself with a bloated, slow, and unmaintainable codebase, you must establish clear boundaries. Here are the common Vibe Coding mistakes you should avoid.

1. Don't Accept Code Blindly : The Illusion of Correctness

The most dangerous thing about AI-generated code is that it *looks* correct. The syntax is clean, variables are named appropriately, and it compiles. But code that compiles isn't necessarily correct.

  • Avoid copy-paste loops: If a generated block doesn't work, don't just paste it back and ask the AI "why is this broken?" Analyze the problem yourself first.
  • Read every loop and condition: Ensure logic paths make sense. AI is prone to off-by-one errors and incorrect logical operators (like `&&` instead of `||`).
Warning

If you don't understand the code the AI generated, do not merge it into your main branch. You are the ultimate owner of the codebase, not the AI model. If something breaks in production at 3:00 AM, the AI won't be online to patch it.

2. Don't Skip Version Control Checkpoints : Save Your Progress

Because AI can rewrite entire files in seconds, it is very easy to wander down a rabbit hole of broken edits. If you don't commit your progress, you can lose hours of working code.

Bad Habit The Safe Alternative
Letting AI edit 10 files in one go without verifying. Commit a working state, then prompt the AI for the next file edit.
Merging direct code changes to `main`. Develop on a feature branch. Use pull request diffs to inspect AI edits.
Ignoring merge conflicts. Manually resolve conflicts to make sure AI changes do not wipe out your manually written logic.

3. Don't Let AI Make Silent Architectural Choices : Keep Control

When you ask an AI to "add a caching system" or "handle file uploads," it will pick whatever library or mechanism is most prominent in its training data. This can lead to random, inconsistent design patterns.

For example, you might find that one utility uses Axios, another uses standard Fetch, and a third uses a custom wrapper. Force consistency. If you have an established pattern, explicitly direct the AI to follow it.

4. Don't Ignore Edge Cases and Error States : Look Beyond the Happy Path

AI models are trained to satisfy prompts quickly, which means they heavily favor the "happy path"β€”the scenario where user input is perfect, database queries succeed, and network requests never timeout. You must actively prompt for error handling:

  • How does this API endpoint respond when the database is offline?
  • Are user inputs sanitized to prevent SQL injection or XSS?
  • Does the frontend UI display a loading spinner and a clear error state when a request fails?

5. Don't Let AI Bloat Your Dependencies : Keep it Lightweight

Need to parse a date? An AI might suggest importing a heavy library like Moment.js when a simple native JavaScript function would suffice. Need a layout element? It might pull in a massive CSS library. Keep your dependencies lean by enforcing a strict "no extra libraries without approval" rule.

βœ— Vibe Coding Pitfalls to Avoid:
  • Never run commands suggested by AI without reading them first (especially scripts containing `rm -rf` or arbitrary package installations).
  • Avoid prompt bloating: Don't feed irrelevant files to the AI, which degrades the generation quality.
  • Don't skip testing: Manual clicking in the browser is not a replacement for automated tests.
  • Don't lose track of your system architecture: If you let AI build modules independently, you'll end up with an unintegratable mess.
